This is the standard domestic violence wheel that some of you may have seen before. Domestic violence is “a pattern of coercive and abusive tactics used to gain power and control over a partner in an intimate relationship.” We acknowledge that men may also be victims of domestic violence.

  • Approximately 95% of victims are female
  • 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence
  • Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the U.S.
  • Crosses all ethnic and socio-economic groups

Alaska Statute 18.66.9909 (5) for Domestic Violence defines “‘household member’ as a current or former spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, sexual partner, roommate, relative by marriage, family member to the 4th degree of consanguinity, or a minor child of any of the relationships described above.”

The domestic violence wheel depicts different types and levels of power and control within relationships. Within each category you can see characteristics of the types of abuse we have defined already.

The next wheel is going to describe caregiver abuse of people with disabilities when the victim is a family member, a person with a disability, or an aging vulnerable adult.
