Neglect and Signs of Neglect
Statutory definition: AS 47.24.900 (9)
"The intentional failure by a caregiver to provide essential care or services to maintain the physical and mental health of the vulnerable adult."
Neglect could be when a caregiver fails to provide proper meals to a vulnerable adult who has special dietary needs such as diabetes. Another example would be a lack of proper monitoring for a vulnerable adult who experiences confusion and wanders. Some other examples are:
- Nutrition/Hydration concerns - An inadequate provision of food or water
- Personal care - Not dressed appropriately for weather conditions; soiled bedding not changed
- Mobility care - Not assisted with transfers to wheelchair, for example; pressure ulcers are present
- Medical care/Medication management - Not taken to doctor; Meds not administered as prescribed
- Social needs - Isolated in his room; environment lacks adequate mental stimulation or emotional support.
