"Disability is only part of who we are."

People First language redefines society's concept of people with disabilities by emphasizing “Disability is only part of who we are.” This expresses the philosophy that a disability makes up one part of a person, who may also be a parent, college student, artist, brother, etc. A disability does not define a person, it only describes a portion of that person's life.
