End the Silence

People’s misconceptions or prejudices regarding disabilities contribute to an atmosphere of “institutional compliance,” that is, being told what to do when and not questioning.

  • Lack of sexual education – this could include basic developmental, puberty or sexual intimacy
  • Isolation
  • Being thought of as less than human
  • Being thought of as not having feelings
  • Being thought of as unable to make one’s own decisions

Think about how these stereotypes may influence anyone’s response to a person being victimized. Think about this from the perspective of the victim, the police responding or any other agency who is responding to assist.
