End the Silence
People’s misconceptions or prejudices regarding disabilities contribute to an atmosphere of “institutional compliance,” that is, being told what to do when and not questioning.
- Lack of sexual education – this could include basic developmental, puberty or sexual intimacy
- Isolation
- Being thought of as less than human
- Being thought of as not having feelings
- Being thought of as unable to make one’s own decisions
Think about how these stereotypes may influence anyone’s response to a person being victimized. Think about this from the perspective of the victim, the police responding or any other agency who is responding to assist.
